The MFL department is staffed by an experienced and forward-thinking team of six teachers dedicated to innovation in the classroom and passionate about language learning.






Course Content at Key Stage 3

Our Year 7 and Year 8 students study Spanish or French for two hours a week. They learn to understand and produce language though listening, reading, writing and speaking the foreign language. Pupils follow a skills-based curriculum based around the key grammar concepts they need to build a solid foundation for their foreign language learning in Key Stage 4 and beyond.

Course Content at Key Stage 4

In Key Stage 4, pupils build on the skills they have developed in lower school and we prepare them to sit the AQA GCSE course in the language they have studied in Key Stage 3. Lessons remain focussed on listening, reading, writing and speaking, with a strong emphasis on grammar and the ability to manipulate language. When studying for a GCSE in a foreign language, pupils are expected to routinely consolidate their learning at home in order to reinforce what they are learning in school.

There are three compulsory themes that pupils study during the GCSE course. These themes are examined through terminal exams at the end of Year 11 in each of the four language skills: listening, reading, speaking and writing. Each exam is worth 25%. Within each theme there are four topic areas:

Identity and Culture

  • Me, my family and friends: Relationships with family and friends; marriage and partnerships
  • Technology in everyday life: social media; mobile technology
  • Free time activities: music, cinema, TV, food, eating out; sport
  • Customs and festivals

Local, National, International and Global Areas of Interest

  • Home, town, neighbourhood and region
  • Social issues: charity/voluntary work; healthy/unhealthy living
  • Global issues: the environment; poverty/homelessness.
  • Travel and tourism

Current and Future Study and Employment

  • My studies
  • Life at college/school
  • Education post 16
  • Career choices and ambitions

How Parents Can Support Learning

  • Take an interest in your child’s homework and ensure that they are spending an appropriate amount of time on it.
  • Encourage your child to show off and practise the skills that they develop in their lessons.
  • During exam season, help them to create a revision timetable which includes specific revision activities to complete. Your child’s class teacher can give them guidance on this.
  • Pupils will have access to an online version of their GCSE textbook, encourage frequent use of this to reinforce work done in school.
  • Encourage your child to listen to music and watch television shows in their foreign language.
  • Encourage your child to use vocabulary learning mobile phone apps such as Memrise or Duolingo.
  • Encourage your child to follow Youtubers from a target-language speaking country and regularly visit useful language learning websites such as those listed below.

The Accord Multi Academy Trust is an educational charity established in September 2016 that is currently made up of four academies who were the founding members of the Trust. In September 2016 Horbury Academy and Ossett Academy & Sixth Form College came together, moving away from their stand-alone Trust status and were joined in December 2016 by Horbury Primary Academy and Middlestown Primary Academy.
